Fenbendazole and Berberine Work Together to Kill Cancer Cells

This well established xenograft model normally results in 80% to 100% tumor growth within 21 d. Initial complete blood counts showed low white cell count with a paucity of lymphocytes in control and test groups. However, the terminal total white cell and neutrophil counts in the fenbendazole-plus vitamin group were significantly (P = 0.001 and P = 0.04) lower than those in the control group. This difference was not attributed to differences in the dietary preparation as the study diets were sterilized using a commercial irradiator and supplemental vitamins were added to compensate for losses during autoclaving.
Berberine

Berberine is an alkaloid extracted from several plants with a long history of use in Chinese medicine. It acts as an antidiabetic agent by increasing insulin secretion and inhibiting glucose absorption in the gut. It also reduces blood lipids and cholesterol levels. It has been shown to suppress cancer growth and induce apoptosis in cells. It also regulates MAPK signaling pathways in human colon cancer cells and hepatoma cells. This modulation is dose- and time-dependent and involves the downregulation of 33 genes involved in cell cycle regulation and differentiation.

Another benefit of berberine is that it can enhance the metabolic homoeostasis of the host through its impact on gut microbiota composition. In particular, it can increase the proportion of bacteria that produce short-chain fatty acids and bile acid synthesis. It can also affect microbial metabolism and the production of interleukins, inflammatory mediators, and enzymes that regulate lipid metabolism and cholesterol levels. This effect is related to its antidiabetic effects and may also be responsible for its anticancer activity.
